GENERAL INFORMATION:
What is the Chattanooga Area Swim League (CASL)?
The CASL is an organization that conducts a summer recreational swimming and diving program for Chattanooga-area youth.
Who may participate in the CASL?
The League is open to any organization that desires to sponsor a team and has its home pool within a sixty (60) air mile radius of the Hamilton County Courthouse.
Is the league open to new teams?
Yes. A sponsoring organization must submit a membership application to the League by February 1st of the year they desire to join. The application must be accompanied by tentative registration of at least 20 swimmers. A two-thirds majority of the voting members of the Board of Directors of the League must approve new teams. The League currently has 15 teams.
Who can participate on a team?
In order to be a member of a team and to participate in League meets, a swimmer or diver must be either a permanent resident of the Chattanooga area or a temporary resident who meets certain conditions provided by the League.
How much does it cost to participate?
A registration fee of $6 is required for each participant and $150 for each team. An additional $20 fee is required for divers.
ORGANIZATION:
How is the league organized?
The CASL is a Tennessee non-profit corporation, as described in Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
How is the CASL managed?
League activities are managed by a Board of Directors that consists of the following: a President, a President-Elect, a Recording Secretary, a Registration Secretary, a Treasurer, and one individual to fill the position of pool representative from each sponsoring organization.
Are there regular meetings?
Yes. The Board holds regular meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each calendar month except November and December. The meetings are ordinarily held at 6:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga downtown YMCA unless otherwise noted.
Are there other scheduled meetings?
Yes. Special meetings may be called by the President or a majority of the Board to conduct appropriate business under the purview of the Board.
How are decisions made?
All Board decision are made by majority vote of pool representatives. A quorum must be present to conduct business.
COMPETITION:
What type of competitive events are available for teams?
The CASL sponsors a dual meet season and a championship meet immediately following the dual meet season. The schedule ordinarily allows for 8 dual meets (4 home and 4 away meets) for each team. Additional team-sponsored invitational meets are available for participation.
When is the season?
The dual meet season usually runs during the months of June and July with the championship meet immediately following the dual meet season.
When are the meets held?
Meets are ordinarily held on Monday and Thursday evenings at 5:30 p.m.
How are meets run?
All meets are conducted under the current short course rules of United States Swimming or its successor, unless modified by the League. Officials, employed by the League, run the meets. Events are judged rather than timed.
What events comprise an ordinary meet?
Dual meets are conducted by a League standardized order of events consisting of one competitive event for each of the four strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly), plus an individual medley event, plus relay events of freestyle and a medley of strokes, plus diving events, each per age group and each with separate male and female competitive events. Either team or both teams may swim heats of exhibition swimmers.
How are the age groups organized?
Age groups consist of: 8 years and under, 9-10 years, 11-12 years, 13-14 years, and 15 years and up as determined by the participants age on June 1st. Graduating high school seniors who have not attained 19 years of age by June 1st will be allowed to compete. Students attending college on a full-time basis will not be able to compete.
Are the age groups the same for diving?
No. Diving competition has three age groups: 10-Under, 11-13 years, and 14 years and up, except during the City Meet championship when swimming age groups are used.
Are there required dives?
Yes. Each diver in the 11-13 and 14 and up age groups are required to perform four dives (one required and three optional) and divers in the 10-Under age group are required to perform three dives (one required and two optional) during each meet.
Does the league have any policies on alcoholic beverages?
Yes. Use of alcoholic beverages is prohibited on the pool deck during the course of each meet sanctioned by the league.
